Why was this paper selected as Editor's Choice?
One of the focal points in the UN Sustainable Development Goals is water. This paper focussed on the water footprint arising from wine production. While water for grape production was not considered, the authors were able to conclude that a potential reduction of 87% in the winery water footprint can be obtained by proper maintenance of treatment facilities. In addition to the direct outcomes reported in this paper, the research reported in this paper highlight an area where further research is needed. Furthermore, improvements in water usage of the magnitude reported in this paper would assist water resource managers in meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
