Discover the Editor's Choice: From each issue of the leading journal Water Science & Technology the core team of editors select one outstanding paper to make Open Access and share across IWA Publishing platforms.
IWA Publishing is pleased to announce that the 19th Editor's Choice paper, selected by Marie-Noelle Pons is now Open Access:
Nitrous oxide emissions from aerobic granular sludge

Why was this paper selected as Editor's Choice?
Aerobic granular sludge (AGS) has been advocated as a promising solution for wastewater treatment. However, as for the classical flocculating sludge, its capacity to emit greenhouse gases such as nitrous oxide (N2O) should be carefully checked. This has been the goal of the authors: they have compared, through a carefully designed and instrumented experiment, the effect of loading rates and aeration strategies in a SBR fed by municipal wastewater. The paper is therefore to be read, both for its scientific discussion about N2O fate in AGS and for the indications it gives for the development of control strategies for full-scale operation of AGS reactors.
