Short-term flexibility for energy grids provided by wastewater treatment plants with anaerobic sludge digestion

M. Schäfer

Why was this paper selected for Editor's Choice?

Sustainable operations of existing WWTPs as well as sustainable development in general, depends on the ability of humankind to divest from fossil fuels. While it has long been understood that there is enormous waste-to-energy potential in WWTPs with anaerobic digestors, that potential is still not fully utilized. This paper provides an ability to be flexible in both energy generation and consumption, and paves the way forward in taking WWTPs off the fossil fuel-dependent power grid.
