Why was this paper selected for Editor's Choice?
Odour problems in sewers have been known since the advent of drainage systems. Despite the severity of the nuisance and the associated problems of concrete corrosion we are still struggling with precise modeling of foul gas release. This is on the one hand due the huge amount of influencing factors and on the other hand on the difficulty of describing air movement precisely. My Editor Choice paper for this issue „Statistical analysis of sewer odour based on 10-year complaint data“ addresses this issue from an uncommon angle. The authors establish a correlation between the spatial and temporal analysis of the complaint data and the underlying phenomena. Most of their conclusions corroborate established knowledge (which is comforting) but they have also been able to define new relations for this specific case study, i.e. Edmonton. My choice of this paper is based on the out-of-the-box approach to a complex problem, which could serve as an example for other investigations.
