Those of us who work with IWA publishing are committed to sharing relevant high quality information and research results generated in the global south. We recognise that researchers in the south face structural barriers to publication. We are committed to challenging the status quo.
The Journal of Water Sanitation and Hygiene for Development (WASHDev) addresses some of these barriers in three ways – first to support authors to develop papers for publication, secondly to provide opportunities for their papers to be published as open access papers free to download, and finally, to provide access to other published papers on an open access basis.

IWA Publishing is working on a number of initiatives to increase global access to important WASH-related research through Open Access. Last year, we waived open access fees for 43% of the open access papers that were published in WASHDev.
Researchers based in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) receive free access to all IWA Publishing journal content as well as guaranteed OA waivers through our Research4Life programme.
Last year, we partnered with Knowledge Unlatched (KU), a library-crowd funding initiative, to raise funds to transition additional globally relevant papers from WASHDev to Open Access. In 2019, we made 14 papers Open Access as part of this initiative and are in the process of making another 14 papers OA in 2020.
IWA Publishing is also actively engaging with libraries, consortia and institutions to set up Open Access agreements allowing researchers to seamlessly publish OA in our journals. We have a number of these agreements already in place in the UK, Austria, the Netherlands and Sweden. This year, we’re working on a pilot project to explore open access agreements between society publishers and library consortia in developing and transition economy countries, granting even further access and OA publishing opportunities to authors in LMICs.
