IWA Publishing is pleased to announce the first Editor's Choice paper, selected by Dr Jo Burgess, which is now Open Access:
Design and start-up of a constructed wetland as tertiary treatment for landfill leachates
Ester Coppini, Laura Palli, Alexandra Antal, Massimo Del Bubba, Elisangela Miceli, Renator Fani and Donatella Fibbi
Water Science & Technology (2019) 79(1): 145-155, https://doi.org/10.2166/wst.2019.030
Why was this paper selected as the Editor's Choice?
"Yes, wetlands for wastewater treatment are as old as the hills, but let me tell you why this is an exciting paper. Firstly, instead of talking about what MIGHT happen if you use a wetland for landfill, the authors went out and did it. That means they built a wetland at a horrible site and went ahead and tried it. Secondly, whether we call them natural systems, or extensive treatment, or passive treatment, or biomimicry, the principle of solving man-made problems in the same way that nature does has an elegance to it, don’t you think? And finally, IT WORKED. The wetland ran at an actual landfill for almost two years, and it made the local environment better. If you’re looking for robust science in the service of society, you can’t get better than that."
